Summer Camp
June 21 – July 29, 2010
Cherry Preschool's camp is a six-week summer program designed to give children a safe, fun, nurturing, developmentally appropriate camp experience. The camp is located in and on the grounds of Cherry Preschool, 1418 Lake Street, Evanston. Camp meets Monday through Thursday from 9:30 to 12:30. All groups are multi-age (3-5 year olds together). The cost of the program is $695.
Camp Staff
Each camp group is taught by two staff members: a Cherry Preschool lead teacher and a teaching assistant. High school or college students serve as counselors, under the supervision of our teaching staff. There will also be junior counselors to assist with trips to the park, playlot activities, snack, and lunchtime. Cherry teacher, Kim Newman, coordinates the camp curriculum and staff.
Camp Activities
- Each week is based on a special theme.
- Cherry teachers plan the curriculum.
- Outdoor play takes place on our on-site playlot-sand boxes, bubble fun, riding toys, water play & sprinklers, climbing equipment, messy art, parachute activities, balls & hoops...and more!
- Daily sack lunches (brought from home) & healthy snacks (provided by Cherry Preschool).
- Daily trips to Penny Park.
- Large motor & creative movement activities in our air-conditioned gym.
Rules of the Game
- Children must be three by June 1.
- Due to the outdoor nature of our program, children must be toilet trained. This means no diapers or pull-ups. Please do not enroll your child until s/he is toilet trained.
- Children must have had previous preschool group experience without a parent attending. For children coming from Cherry’s Transition classes, teacher recommendations are required. For children new to Cherry Preschool, parents/guardians should discuss their child’s prior experience in group settings with the Director before enrolling. We take this position in the best interest of the children.
- Due to its short nature, summer camp is not a good place to work on separation issues.
- Groupings of children are created based on friendships and balancing the group by age and gender.
- To ensure excellent supervision, groups may not exceed 16 children under the supervision of a lead teacher, assistant teacher, counselor, and junior counselor.
- Absences for any reason do not reduce tuition. There are no refunds for non-attendance due to vacations or illness.
- Families wanting 3-week sessions or with children not yet toilet trained should submit an application without payment and will be placed on waiting lists in order of date received. As appropriate spaces become available for 3-week or recently toilet trained campers, these children will be placed.
Priority Enrollment
Cherry Preschool students & their siblings will have a priority registration period ending January 29. Applications received after January 29 will be processed along with non-priority applications on a first come, first served basis. Criteria for placement in groups include: balancing groups by age, sex, and race and creating the best possible group dynamics. Final decisions about placement are made by the administrative staff in consultation with teachers. Children must be 3 by 6/1/2010 and toilet trained to enroll. Initial enrollment is for the full 6 weeks only.
Families wanting 3-week sessions or with children not yet toilet trained should complete this application and submit it without payment to be placed on waiting lists in order of date received. Families of children with special needs should meet with the Rhonda Cohen prior to enrollment to determine the appropriateness of the camp program for their child.
